Sebald Justinus Brugmans (1763-1819) was a well known Dutch scholar in the fields of anatomy, botany, chemistry, medicine and natural history. He was a professor at the Universities of Franeker and Leyden and served also as an inspector general of Military Health Service. During his prolific career of more than 30 years he served under various rulers. The scientific correspondence exchanged between him and numerous scholars, Dutch as well as foreign scientists, is kept in several archives and libraries, both in the Netherlands and abroad. This publication presents the excerpts of more than 550 letters. They give evidence of Dutch scholarship in an intriguing period of the history of the Netherlands.
